04 Apr 2023 LIFE BEWARE develops a videogame that aims to raise awareness about climate change
LIFE BEWARE is a European project for the natural management of rainwater and for a resilient green area based on nature-based solutions and targeted to communities for tackling water management problems.
The project produced a videogame based on an imaginary place: life beware valley, which shows the resources available for the valley as well as the results of human actions, focusing on the natural resources and the hydraulic risks of the area.
The videogame is a hybrid of an online digital game, board game, and role-playing game. It is a collaborative game in which decisions can be made individually or in groups. The players become part of the part as inhabitants of the valley, who face a series of events related to hydraulic risk and climate change. The final objective of the game is the deliberation of the choices made as well as to cause as little damage as possible with each choice. Players should consider all the variables around the available environmental resources, the hydraulic risk reduction, the services of the ecosystem, the economic resources in the short and the long term, and the well-being of the citizens. The situation of the valley at the end depicts the quality of the decisions taken collectively.
The game was based on a discrete choice model in which it explains or predicts a choice from a set of alternatives. Yet participants have their priorities regarding environmental resources, and the videogame aims to open the debate and the negotiation so that players agree on their priorities, considering everyone’s needs. The video game is an instrument to understand the complexities behind climate change as well as the optimization of resources and the trade-off between self-interest and community interest.
LIFE BEWARE video game is targeted at the youth and it is available on the website of the LIFE BEWARE project. It is a recommended tool for schools and Local Authorities to raise awareness about climate change, the hydraulic risks, and the balance between self and collective interests.
